Chapter 1: Understanding Express Entry

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is an online immigration system introduced by the Canadian government in January 2015 to manage applications for permanent residency under three main economic immigration programs. It is designed to streamline the process and attract skilled workers who can contribute to the Canadian economy. The system uses a points-based Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to evaluate and rank candidates, with the highest-ranking individuals receiving invitations to apply (ITAs) for permanent residency.

Key Programs Managed by Express Entry

  1. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
    • For skilled workers with foreign work experience who meet specific criteria for education, language ability, and work experience.
  2. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
    • For skilled workers qualified in a skilled trade, with job offers or certification from a Canadian authority.
  3. Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
    • For individuals with at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada, who have gained experience through a temporary work permit.

How Express Entry Works

  1. Determine Eligibility
    • Prospective candidates must first determine if they meet the eligibility criteria for one of the three Express Entry programs. This involves assessing factors such as age, education, work experience, and language proficiency.
  2. Create an Express Entry Profile
  • Eligible candidates create an online profile, providing detailed information about their skills, work experience, language ability, education, and other personal information. This profile is then entered into the Express Entry pool.
  1. Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)
    • The CRS is a points-based system used to assess and score candidates’ profiles. Points are awarded based on factors such as age, education, work experience, language ability, and adaptability. Additional points can be earned for a valid job offer, a provincial nomination, or having Canadian education or work experience.
  2. Enter the Express Entry Pool
    • Once the profile is submitted, candidates enter the Express Entry pool and are ranked against other candidates based on their CRS scores. The higher the score, the better the chances of receiving an ITA for permanent residency.
  3. Regular Draws and Invitations to Apply (ITAs)
    • The Canadian government conducts regular draws (usually every two weeks) to select the highest-ranking candidates from the pool. Those selected receive an ITA, which means they are invited to apply for permanent residency.
  4. Submit Application for Permanent Residency
    • Candidates who receive an ITA have 60 days to submit a complete application for permanent residency, including all required supporting documents and fees. This application is processed by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
  5. Processing and Approval
    • The IRCC aims to process most Express Entry applications within six months. During this time, the application is reviewed, and if everything is in order, the candidate will receive confirmation of permanent residency.
  6. Landing in Canada
    • Once approved, candidates receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and can make arrangements to move to Canada. Upon arrival, they complete the landing process and officially become permanent residents of Canada.
